How to Measure for a Lariat Necklace at Home

Where should your lariat necklace land? That depends on your neck, your layers, and how you like to wear it.

Our Brave Daughters lariat comes in four lengths: 18, 20, 22, and 24 inches. To help you choose, there’s an easy way to try each length at home before ordering. All you need is a measuring tape, scissors, and some ribbon or string.

Our Lariat Necklace Lengths

Each length is measured tip to tip, meaning it’s the full length of the piece—including the section that hangs down.

Lariat Size Ribbon Length to Cut
18 inches 18 inches
20 inches 20 inches
22 inches 22 inches
24 inches 24 inches

The listed length isn’t just the portion that wraps around your neck. How much chain you leave around your neck affects how much hangs below the clasp.

How to Measure for Your Lariat Necklace

1. Cut your ribbon to length

Cut a piece of ribbon or nonstretch string to the exact length you’re considering: 18, 20, 22, or 24 inches.

If you’re deciding between sizes, cut a piece for each option and label them. Trying them side by side makes it easier to see the difference.

2. Put on your usual necklaces

If you plan to layer your lariat, put on the necklaces you already wear together.

This lets you see how each length works with your actual stack—where it overlaps, where it leaves space, and where the drop will land.

Prefer to wear it solo? Try it that way.

3. Wrap the ribbon around your neck

Drape the ribbon around your neck, bringing both ends toward the front.

To mimic the lariat’s closure, hold one end against a point along the ribbon where the clasp would connect to a chain link. Let the remaining length hang down to create the drop.

Avoid simply matching the two ends together: you want to recreate both the loop around your neck and the length hanging below the closure.

4. Adjust where the clasp would sit

Move the point where you’re holding the ribbon to try different fits.

A closer fit around your neck leaves more length for the drop. A looser fit around your neck leaves a shorter drop. Try a few positions to see what feels right.

Check that you have enough room around your neck and that the hanging section lands where you want it.

5. Compare your options in the mirror

Look at each length with your necklace stack and a neckline you wear often.

Pay attention to:

  • Neck fit: Do you like it sitting closer or lower?

  • Drop length: Where do you want the tip to land?

  • Layering: How does it sit alongside your other chains and pendants?

  • Comfort: Does the placement feel good when you move?

The ribbon won’t recreate the exact weight or drape of the chain, but it will help you compare lengths and placement before choosing.

Why the Same Lariat Looks Different on Everyone

A necklace shown on someone else gives you styling inspiration, but it won’t necessarily land in the same place on you.

Your neck size, proportions, clasp placement, and existing jewelry all affect the fit. That’s why trying the lengths on your own body is more useful than choosing from a photo alone.

Lariat Necklace Sizing FAQs

What lengths does the Brave Daughters lariat come in?

Our lariat comes in 18, 20, 22, and 24-inch lengths, measured tip to tip.

Does the listed length include the hanging section?

Yes. The measurement includes the entire piece, including the section that hangs below the clasp.

Can I adjust how the lariat sits?

Yes. The clasp connects between the chain links, allowing you to change the fit around your neck and the length of the drop within the total length you choose.

How do I choose a lariat length for layering?

Try the ribbon method while wearing your usual necklace stack. Adjust the simulated clasp position, then compare how each length sits with your other pieces.

What if I’m between lengths?

Try both ribbon lengths before deciding. A longer lariat gives you more total chain to work with, but the best choice depends on both the fit around your neck and how long you want the drop.
