Conscious Consumerism-A Hot Take
You might have read our previous blog post about our experience designing for the costume jewelry industry and how that’s shaped our views on sustainable production. Spoiler Alert: it put a big poop in our mouth regarding most manufacturing processes and consumerism, in general. But, we still really like beautiful objects! And, we love supporting the makers and producers of beautiful objects! And, as two Earth sign heavy broads, we love creature comforts. So, how do we align these seemingly opposing views?
ENTER CONSCIOUS CONSUMERISM!
IT’S A CORE VALUE FOR US AT BD.
We believe with a little effort you can make fewer, more special purchases, allowing you to instill a deeper value and meaning into the objects you are buying. We believe these objects, jewelry specifically, tell a story (whether overt or subliminal) to you and about you. Every time you look at an heirloom bracelet from your grandmother you are reminded of that relationship and the story around it. A pair of earrings from a great love remind you of your connection and commitment. A bracelet on your wrist reminds you of your connection to your spirituality. Jewelry has the power to do that.
DOES PURCHASING IN THIS WAY SPEAK TO YOU?
Below are some tips for instilling meaning and telling your personal story with the objects, jewelry, and moments in your life.
Ritual: creating a ritual around how you use everyday objects allows space for intentionality and gratitude. Pouring your morning coffee slowly. Saying a mantra or prayer when you put on your jewelry for the day. Setting an intention for nourishment and health when you prepare your daily meals. As they say, where your mind goes the body will follow.
Intentional Purchasing: Buying an object with the intention of using it as a talisman or reminder of your purpose. Perhaps you buy yourself a piece of jewelry when you’ve reached a big milestone or goal. That piece will always remind you of your progress and journey.
Make It Fun: A lot of this may seem heavy and cumbersome, but it really doesn’t have to be. Being intentional with our purchases and really considering what we bring into our home and life can bring so much joy and meaning! Voting with your dollar ensures that you are supporting the world that you want to see and be a part of. FUN! Hanging onto jewelry and objects from your family tree can bring some pretty great memories. FUN! Having les stuff to care for and clean and worry about losing. FUN!
All told, our current status quo culture of consumerism does not support this lifestyle or consciousness.
IT’S UP TO US TO DECIDE HOW WE WANT TO MAKE MEANING OF OUR EVERYDAY OBJECTS!
Next week we will show you HOW we layer in existing pieces from our collection with our Forever Jewelry to make it special!
